COMP 2000 - Citation Exercise

History is our teacher, it shows our biggest flaws and successes, and it is in maps that history is writing. Without history, writers would not know the contexts of which to write in, “In many fields of study, an understanding of the geographical context of places and events is central to deep comprehension of the subject matter” (Educause Initiative 1). As explained by the Educause Initiative (Mapping Mashups), writers base their stories, experiences and knowledge off of history and since maps are the written form of history, it’s simple to see why maps should be taught in composition classes around the country. Maps allow a writer to link the event, place and time together in the form of a visual representation, not to mention it also gives the author a view into other things such as landscape, distance, so on and so forth. A good example of maps helping the author would be as follows, say a author is writing about the civil war. A map of the civil war would help him extremely in identifying location, location relevant to each other, landscape, population and even possible military movement. The map could also help the author for example in identifying what the social trend of the time was by looking at the region and analyzing that with the date. Indeed the map would be extremely useful to any author; they can do so many numerous things. The map can help the author in making connections. For example back to the civil war, an author writing about why the south lost can look at a map and make connections such as, connecting the weather with the landscape and considering those as factors of the south’s eventual loss. A map can also demonstrate events dealing with the matter that eventually shaped it. Maps do truly give authors a great resource when writing and most importantly it’s visual.
